How to Choose a Kayak

When most people think of kayaks they usually think of hard shell kayak made of plastic, wood, kevlar, or carbon fiber. The hard shell kayaks are also known as rigid. Out of this type, the fiberglass are the easiest to repair and the easiest to damage. Wooden kayaks come in kits and many people like them because they can build their own and they have a classic design. The prices of wooden kayaks vary. The most expensive type of kayak is kevlar. It is expensive, but it is also worth it because kevlar kayaks are very light which is desirable. The other two types of kayaks are the folding boats, and also the inflatable kayaks. Those are the three types of structural classifications of kayaks.

Aluminum or wooden frames are under stretched fabric on folding kayaks. Folding kayaks are much easier to transport and store then the hard shell kayaks. The folding kayaks are the most expensive type of kayak on the market because they are flexible, sea worthy, tough, and stable. Though they last quite a bit longer, the census is that they are not as fast as hard shell kayaks. They are not as maneuverable either. Though they lack the speed and performance of hard shell kayaks, they are still exceedingly popular.

It is really easy to kayak with an inflatable boat. They are pretty popular because of this. They transport and store well. Also, they are the least expensive type of kayak.

When choosing your kayak you should consider the type of boating you will be doing. You need to think about how much paddling you will be doing and how often you will be doing it. You should also think about your experience as a paddler. If you are inexperienced you should look for a boat with good initial stability. The more experienced kayaker will look for a boat that has good final stability. The difference between the two is the "tippiness". An experienced paddler might want a tight cock-pit when a beginner should have a bigger one that is easier to get out of incase the kayak tips over. An important thing to remember before you pick your boat is where you are going to store it, how you are going to transport it, and the weight that would be practical for both. Lastly, consider passenger capacity and comfort.

Kayaks are typically classified to the type of boating you will be doing. Doubles are fast and stable, but singles are faster. A double kayak should have partners paired one weak one strong, and don't forget to choose a kayak that has adequate storage space.
